30 Days of Star Wars: Creating my R2-D2 Costume: Part One

I'm currently taking a costuming class at my local community college and our final project is a costume of our design from our chosen era. Since I knew I wanted to make a new costume to wear for Star Wars, I decided to make an R2-D2 costume, re-imagined in the 1950s.

Upon talking to my teacher, she pointed me in the direction of researching sci-fi films from the 1950s. Here are some of my inspirations for the costume. Once I have it finalized, then I can do the fun part, looking for the items to create it!

Thank You for Being a Friend

Velvet Dress: Forever 21
Blazer: Target
Bag: Old Navy
Necklace: Express
Tights: Target

Today I spent very in due girl bonding time with my friend Kathleen. While we may only live 30 minutes from each other, the last time we hung out was at a No Doubt concert in August of '09. So we met up in Downtown Riverside and for the next 4 hours we talked and got up to date on the goings on in our lives over coffee, (hazelnut lattes from The Coffee Bean are very good btw), wandered around downtown and had some yummy cupcakes. I had a great time hanging out with Kathleen and we plan on hanging out again much sooner next time.
First off we went to the Riverside Museum with the intentions of checking out the Star Trek exhibit, until we found out the exhibit is at a different location. Oops! It's open until February 28th, so we still have time to check it out. But we still explored their current exhibits.

We then made our way to the antique market which was a candy land for me. There's four floors full of jewelery, furniture, clothing and cute tchotchkes. We spent a good hour and a half wandering around the different booths.

I ended up picking up two brooches of a banjo and a cat and a little Betsy McCall figure. I picked the one where she's holding the microphone, but I liked them all.

Afterwards we filled our tummies with cupcakes from Casey's Cupcakes. The last time I was in the area the shop wasn't finished, but when we walked in it was all pink and girly. They had a lot of varieties of cupcakes. It took me a few minutes to pick one, but I ended up getting the cupcake of the month, Casey's Confetti Cheer while Kathleen picked the Scrumptious Cinnamon Sugar.  I heard their Razzmatazz Raspberry is good, but of course it was sold out when I was there. All the more reason to go back and try it.
Also random trivia about the shop.
The owner Casey Reinhardt, was in season two of Laguna Beach.

On the agenda for next week, my first visit to the LACMA. :)

Done and Done

After hemming and hawing for months, I've finally opened up my own Etsy store!

So far I just have two listings, but I plan on adding more later on this week.

Thrifting Finds and a Special Purchase

Went thrifting today and I picked up a few cute things.

Red flutter sleeved-top with cute little anchors on it.

Blue and white rose print dress.
It's a little longer than I would like, so it will be shortened.

Beautiful pink beaded gown. I can picture a young Loretta Lynn or Dolly Parton wearing this while performing at the Grand Ole Opry. It's from Jake Bryan and after doing a little research found out it was a clothing line from the 60's/70's. I've been thinking about opening up an Etsy shop and when I do have one, this dress will be in there.

I also ordered this today....

The iPod Touch!

I got sucked into the iPad hype. But after really thinking about it, I decided that the iPod Touch would be best for me. Helps that someone brought me back down to earth about what I really wanted out of device like this. :P
I ended up getting the 64GB and I got a pretty good deal through my work.
Can't wait to get my hands on it!

But it was calling my name...

I was browsing on Brown Bettie's ebay site and I have just placed a bid on this...

So it's not exactly practical for Southern California, but just look at it. The lovely fur collar, the cute covered buttons, not to mention it's in a goes with everything neutral color.

I'm crossing my fingers that I will not be outbid.

Videos of the day:
Two weeks ago I saw Demetri Martin perform over at UC Riverside, and I have to say it was an amazing show. It was non-stop laughter from beginning to end. He had a bunch of new material, which is always awesome. Such as his new large pad ideas.
Sit back and enjoy.

Another piece for the collection

It's been awhile since I've been on Ebay. But after a long hiatus, I was ready to get back into the wonderful world of online auctions. For a while I was having the worst of luck. Bidding on things that I loved, but losing them due to quick bidders towards the end of the auction, or the bids were just too high for me.

But I have to say that luck was on my side this week as I finally won a item I was bidding on. I'm sending out the payment tomorrow, but next week I will be the proud owner of this vintage blue and rainbow sequin dress
courtesy of Sally Jane Vintage.

This is why I love Ebay. I figure it would have taken many hours and thrift stores to find a dress like this. Don't get me wrong, I still love going to thrift stores and rummaging for hidden treasures. But sometimes I don't have time to make it to a thrift store. So this runs a close second.
I can't wait to get the dress in the mail.
Let me count the ways to make this dress work for fall/winter...
