I apologize for the delay, but I'm finally getting around to posting the rest of my Comic-con recaps. My Friday outfit included another geeky graphic tee. This time it's the fictional fast food joint (that you probably shouldn't eat at) Cheesy Beards from The Guild. I got it at last years Comic-Con and it's a conversation starter when I wear it. When someone asks me about this shirt, sometimes I'll tell them it's a regional franchise and that I got the shirt from a friend. :P

I started Friday by walking down 6th street where I got free coffee and pins from the Falling Skies street and then I made my way over to where Marvel Comics were displaying their monster trucks. You heard right, monster trucks. Next year during Comic-con, Marvel is going to present Monster Trucks Live.

It looks like it would be an awesome event to experience and they even had some of the trucks on display. 

Again, I spent most of the day walking the floor or outside the convention center. It's way better than having to wait in line for panels, which I ended up doing the next day. 

I also have a really cool celeb sighting. My brother and I were leaving the exhibit floor when I saw over by a Starbucks cart, Edgar Wright. A favorite of my brother and I, he directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He was just there getting coffee, so my brother quickly got out his Polaroid camera and got a picture with him.

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture because I was dumb and took too long figuring out how to use my brothers camera. I was just too director struck. Ah maybe next time.

Adult Swim had ice cream trucks that handed out Ben and Jerry's ice cream bars.

We bumped into the Venture Bros Monarchs and Futurama's Fry at Smashburger.

Later on my brother and I went over to the House of Blues to check out Donald Glover (of Community) where he performed as Childish Gambino.  It was an awesome show (he had a full band to back him up) and he's  just super talented. Not only does he act and write (he used to write for 30 Rock),  but he has a great singing voice and is a pretty good rapper. Plus anyone that randomly name checks Shining Time Station in a rap song is awesome in my book.

Last night I went to go see Jenny and Johnny over at The Casbah and it was awesome. The venue is small and cozy, even it was stifling hot at times. No wonder the last four digits of their phone number spells hell. Haha. But everyone was chill, bopping our bodies along to the music. Nik Freitas and La Sera (who I think is a doppelganger for Florence Welch) were the two opening acts and I enjoyed both very much.

The last time I saw Jenny Lewis in concert, she was opening for Death Cab for Cutie in support for her debut solo album, Rabbit Fur Coat. Johnathan Rice was also touring with her as part of her back up band, so it was great seeing them perform again as Jenny and Johnny. I'll also add that Jenny is a good performer because when she sings, you can see the emotion she brings to each song. Now that I've seen her as a solo act and in Jenny and Johnny I'm hoping one day to see her with the rest of her Rilo Kiley band

I'm so glad I have the next 4 days off. Granted I was supposed to spend the weekend at Coachella, but things happen and you just have to roll with the punches. The good thing is that I was able to sell my ticket and I can still watch some of the performances online. I'm also going to be productive this weekend and tackle some projects I've been meaning to do for a while. Did I mention I'm going to see Aziz Ansari with my brother tomorrow? The last time I went to a comedy show was Demetri Martin 3 years ago at UCR. It's about time I went to another one. I do know that hilarity will ensue tomorrow.

Viva La Música!: They Love to Tell You Stay Inside the Lines...

John Mayer was my first. 

First time going to a concert that is. 

I remember picking up his debut album Room for Squares in the beginning of 2002 and falling in love with it. Every song told a story with innate observation. I even liked the cheeseball, "You're Body is a Wonderland." Cause even if you don't want to admit it, you secretly want a guy to tell you that. He opened the floodgates for me in the sensitive singer/songwriter guy genre. With the album having a permanent place in the car stereo system, I knew that when he made a tour stop to San Diego, I had to go see him concert. It took some parental convincing to let me go. But let me go they did and on a warm August day, (the 18th to be exact) I made my way to San Diego to experience my first concert. 

I went with my friends Brittany and Joe, who were dating at the time. But being the third wheel didn't faze me, all I could think of was that I was going to see John Mayer perform live! As I walked with them to the ticket gates at  San Diego States Open Air Theater, I could feel all this energy bursting out of me. I think the ticket guy had to calm me down a little bit cause I wasn't even in the venue yet. But rest assured, there was no crying or fainting before, during or after the concert. 

We took our seats and saw the two opening acts, The John Butler Trio and Guster, perform. But in all honestly  I couldn't wait for John to perform. So when John and his band walked on stage, to I think it was either Nelly's "Hot in Herre" or the "Star Wars Theme", I was fixated. For the next hour and an half, I sang along to every song, marveled at his witty banter and laughed when he did his weird guitar faces or his hee-haw dance (if you ever watched his first DVD Any Given Thursday with the commentary, you'll know what I mean.)

It was one of those concerts where the musician and the audience where totally digging each other. Everyone was on the same energy wave. I knew I didn't want to concert to end, but alas it did. So as everyone filed out of the Open Air Theater, my friends and I waited over by the tour buses along with our fellow John Mayer fans. After what it seemed like an hour of waiting, he finally emerge to sign autographs and take pictures. However his "handler" told the crowd that he wasn't taking individual pictures. Boo. So I had to devise another way of getting my picture taken with John.

When I look at it now, it's the lamest picture ever. I'm still trying to figure out why I have my hand up. I think I was leaning back and didn't want to loose my balance. I guess it's good to know that eveyone there had to do some lame pose like this. Despite that he did sign my concert ticket and the cd sleeves for Room for Squares and his EP, Inside Wants Out. 

I remember having to start school the next day, but I didn't care. I was still on my concert high. I swear I couldn't stop smiling the next day. 

I can't believe it's been 8 years since then and John has gotten himself in some crazy shenanigans and is usually accompanied by the d-word (take your pick). 

Especially in the last month. 

It makes me want to tell him...

 But despite that, I still enjoy his music and nothing can take away from my first concert experience.

So excited!

You said this city has a beating heart...

Last Friday, my boyfriend and I had a little day trip to San Diego, which ended with us going to see Death Cab for Cutie in Solana Beach.

First we went to Balboa park. We walked around for the most part but also went to the Japanese Friendship Garden, which was small but quaint. I liked the Koi pond there.
I think we're going to have to make another trip in the near future. There's a Richard Avedon exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art that I want to see.

After spending a few hours at Balboa Park, we decided to check out this cupcake shop located in Hillcrest, that I found out about on-line a few days before. Called Babycakes it was this cute little cupcake shop inside of an old house right on 5th. Their cupcakes were muffin sided and very yummy. We chose three of them, the Blood Orange, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Pistachio.

My favorite was the Blood Orange. It was a moist white cake with hints of orange in it. It also had some blueberries on the bottom of the cake, a raspberry/citrus jelly in the middle and topped off with cream cheese frosting. It was so good.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly was my boyfriends favorite. That was a chocolate cake with grape jelly in the center and peanut butter frosting. I think we were both mixed about the Pistachio cupcake, which was had bits of pistachio in a green hued white cake with green butter cream frosting. I think it was the bits of pistachio in the cupcake that threw us off. Overall, I would go back there the next time I was in Hillcrest.

After our snack of delicious cupcakes, we made our way to the Gaslamp District to get some dinner at the Red Pearl Kitchen. We were still a little full from our cupcake excursion, that we just ordered appetizers. So we decided to get the Vegetable Spring Rolls and the Thai Chili-Glazed Calamari. Little did we know that we went during Happy Hour, so they gave us even more food, for free. So we also got two of their Spicy Tuna Tempura Eggplant and Pan-Fried Potstickers. Plus a little bowl of their Wok-Roasted Edamame. We didn't even get to finish the appetizers we ordered. Too bad we didn't get any pictures of it, cause it was all really good.

When we finished all can of our dinner, we finally made the trek up the 5 Freeway, to the Belly Up Tavern in the beach town of Solana Beach. I was really excited that Death Cab was going to play a show there. Not only is the venue really small and intimate, but I'd be able to take pictures there. However, as we pulled up near the venue, we saw signs plastered along the venue wall stating, "No Cameras or Recording Devices During the Concert." I was a little disappointed cause I wanted to take pictures. But I didn't want to risk it, so I left the camera in the car. Good thing I did cause during the show, didn't matter if they had a camera or cell phone, if security caught you taking pictures or filming, it got confiscated right away.

Overall it was a wonderful show. The crowd was good along with the set-list. You can check out the set-list for the show here. My boyfriend was fascinated by the lighting of the show, which I thought was cute. Plus he got me a shirt, which I will post soon.

It was a great day trip and I hope to do it again real soon.

I bought this dress two weeks ago, but when I put it on I felt like it was missing something. So I took out this slip dress with ruffles on the bottom and put it underneath. It turned out nice. Also to not be so depressing looking, I brought out the bag for a pop of color.

The concert was really good. Rufus was a wonderful and engaging performer. Full of witty stories and banter. His sister, Lucy Wainwright Roche opened who was equally talented and funny. One of the songs she performed was about how she was on a date with a guy in England, when his lung collapsed during the date and he had to be rushed to the emergency room, or the A&E as they call it in England. Also in the audience was their dad, Loudon Wainwright III. He performed with both of them and after the show he was outside talking to fans including myself.

Their humor must come from him cause as he was getting his picture taken, he kept talking about how since Rufus wasn't there he was the next best thing, since he created him. I swear he could have charged a $1 and we would still take pictures with him.

I saw Jimmy Eat World at the House of Blues San Diego last night and I have to say it was amazing. They were touring to commemorate the 10th anniversary of their Clarity album which they played in it's entirety. It was great getting a chance to hear these songs live even the 16 minute, "Goodbye Sky Harbor."

The security guards at the HOB were really strict about taking pictures. They wouldn't even let the crowd take pictures with their camera phones. But I did manage to sneak in a couple with my phone.
