Thug Notes

I was shown this video series over the weekend and I thought it was a very clever way to summarise and analyze classic books in a way that not only understand but be entertained at the same time. In each video, Sparky Sweets, PhD guides you through a classic book or play though his hilarious notes and illustrations. Not only does it bring an entertaining perspective to learning, which is I think should always be welcomed, but makes me want to re-read books and look up the themes that I might have missed the first time around.

Whovian Week: Makeup Tutorial Me

In the past month, I've started to watch beauty vloggers and pay more attention to my daily beauty/makeup routine. So I decided to type up "Doctor Who Makeup Tutorials" and boy did I find a lot! I think it's great that there's not only tutorials on how to do your make up like The Ood or a Weeping Angel, but also for Amy, Rose, Clara, and even Sarah Jane. Here are a few I found on the interwebs.

Whovian Week: Bits and Bobs



Ermahgerd, two more days until the 50th Anniversary special!!! Here are some things to tide you over until then.

An Adventure in Space and Time is airing on BBC 2 tonight, but we'll get to see it tomorrow on BBC America. For now here's a clip with David Bradley as William Hartnell, Jessica Raine as Verity Lambert, and Sacha Dhawan as Waris Hussein.

Whovian Week: The Night of the Doctor

A few days ago, The BBC debut a prequel short "The Night of the Doctor" and to my (and basically every ones surprise) it served as how the Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann, went through his regeneration process. It was unfortunate that he only got to play the Doctor on screen for one TV movie on Fox (although he has done plenty of radio programs as Eight). Imagine if an episode of Rosanne didn't clobber them in the ratings and it became an "Americanized" show. I honestly don't think it would be the same. Anyways, I've lost count on how many times I've watched it. There's  the finality with the Eight Doctors regeneration, but there are still some questions such as how does John Hurt as the "War Doctor" bridge the gap between Eight and Nine and more over, will we ever see Christopher Eccelston make an appearance. The latter will be highly unlikely given how vocal he is about his not so great experence while working on Doctor Who. But you never know, the Doctor does lie after all.

Then there's this clip, shown during BBC's Children in Need Special. Here Eleven and Clara are reunited with Kate Stewart aka, The Briagdier's Daughter, a high ranking member of UNIT. They are at a museum, investigating the mysterious disappearance of figures in some paintings. As he starts figuring out what the cause is, a portal pops ups all of a sudden and of course he throws the fez in before himself. Who happens to pick up the fez and put it on right away? Ten of course. The look on there faces when they discover each other is priceless and it make me even more giddy with excitement for the 50th episode.

The other day I was on YouTube and when I started to type Tom Hiddleston, "Tom Hiddleston Dancing" was the second most searched phrase. So to beat the Monday blues, here are some videos of him cutting a rug and knocking some chairs.

Whovian Wednesday: The Prince and the Doctor

What if the Daleks were voiced by the second in line for the British Throne?

Today Prince Charles and Camilla visited the Doctor Who set in Cardiff, Whales. Charles has been a fan of the show since he was 15, so his inner fanboy must have been seething with excitement. Just look at this picture!

Not only did Charles and Camilla meet with Matt Smith, Jenna Louise Coleman, and Steven Moffat; but they also got to see some the famous Doctor Who monsters. Although I don't consider Strax a monster. More like a potato head.

This final picture is too cute. Charles, just abdicate the throne to William. You'd have way more fun on the Doctor Who set. I can see him as a friend to Wilf becuase he needs to be back on the show too.

I already have a feeling that this movie will make me cry at some point. It's either this or the animated short that comes before it.

If you want an end of the world movie where Michael Cera gets impaled by a light pole, then this is for you. 

World War Z (June 21)

Zombies! Oh and Brad Pitt. 

Whovian Wednesday: Goodbye My Raggedy Man

As we all know on Saturday, Matt Smith confirmed that he will be departing as the Doctor during the Christmas Special. While it's sad to see him leave, Smith had a good three season run and as we have all known from the beginning, the Doctors life in the TARDIS is brief, but oh so wonderful.

So as we prepare to say goodbye, here are my 11 favorite moments with Eleven.

1) The Eleventh Hour

While we were still in mourning over Ten, we were introduced to Eleven. Full of fun and childlike wonder. Much like Ten, there was something about him where you just wanted to go up and hug him. We also learned that apples are rubbish, beans are evil, and fish fingers and custard is the greatest if strangest food combination ever.

Also... Bow ties are cool. 

2) Vincent and the Doctor

This is my favorite series 5 episode and the last 10 mins of it helped cement it. I still tear up when he brings Van Gogh to the present to show him that his art is appreciated. Although he still Van Gogh still ended his life to Amy's dismay, Eleven has the perfect quote to sum up life, 

“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

3) “Biting is excellent. It’s like kissing only there’s a winner.”

In this Neil Gaiman penned episode, we find out who the Doctors real OTP is, the TARDIS. No matter how many companions he has, what other planets he visits or loves he has (Rose and River), his great love will always be the TARDIS. He does call her "Sexy" after all, but only when they are alone. 

4) Closing Time

I think Craig would have made a great companion to Eleven. I hope he comes back in some capacity for the Christmas Episode. This was my favorite interaction between the two. 

5) The Name of the Doctor

This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes to watch between Eleven and River because we know this verson of her is the one that Ten "saved" from the Library. I really liked River and Eleven together. I think she's just as feisty, (and sometimes even more so) as her mom Amy and she complimented him. I wish there could have been an episode with just the two of them. Also unlike Clara, the TARDIS approves of her.

6) "Raggedy man I remember you are you are late to my wedding!"

My favorite part of this episode? The Doctor dancing like a deranged Giraffe of course. It also has another of my favorite Eleven quotes, 

" We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one." 

7) "And here we are. You and me on the last page."

The last episode with Eleven and the Ponds left me a blubbering mess. Just watching this clip where he runs and finds the "last page" Amy left him in Central Park had me tearing up again. This show has given me so many feels.

8) "I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool."

Don't mess with the fez. Unless you're Amy and River. 

9) "I. AM. TALKING!"

I just love his first big epic speech as as the Doctor basically saying "don't mess with me aliens!" 

10) "Run You Clever Boy and remember..."

Moffat pulled a fast one on us by introducing "Clara" in the Asylum of the Daleks. Although at the time, the Doctor only knew her as Oswin Oswald and that she was actually converted into a Dalek. Now after watching the season finale, it all makes sense. Well kind of. 

11) Cue Benny Hill music. 

I didn't want to leave you with the feels, so here's a video of outtakes from series 5.

On second thought, I think watching this might make you even more emotional. 

Whovian Wednesday: The Nerdist Made Me Watch It

Like any Whovian, there was a time where we have never heard of the show and it was after constant badgering that we finally decided to give it a try. The badgering just happened to come from the Nerdist. I've been listening to the podcasts for the past three years and Chris Hardwick would always mentioned it. I even went to one of the Nerdist live shows during Comic-Con in '11 where Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were their special guests. It wasn't until after Comic-Con that I started watching Doctor Who and you know how the rest goes.

So naturally the Nerdist site would have DW related videos and here are some of my favorites.

Filmed during last years Comic-Con, Chris, Matt, and Johan went up against Matt, Karen, Arthur Darvill, and current show runner and writer Steven Moffat, in some bowling fun where Karen showed her unintentional bowling prowess.

What's even cuter than cat videos? Cute Ten and Eleven puppets in equally as cute video. How many times can I use cute in this description? Four apparently.

Monday Videos: Mister JT

I decided to my video posts to Mondays because who doesn't watch YouTube videos on the first day back at work while settling from the weekend.

Who else is going to pick up The 20/20 Experience tomorrow? I'm so excited that Justin Timberlake is finally releasing new music after spending the last seven years making films and getting married. I already know that I'll have the album on continuous rotation for the next week and I also really want to see him and Jay-Z in concert this summer. Fingers crossed that it'll happen.

When I saw this image on The Postal Service's website couple of weeks ago, I squeed. Give Up is an album that shaped my musical tastes in my early twenties. Wow, it is crazy how much time has passed when I can write something like that. For the 10th anniversary, they are going to reissue the album in April and will perform at Coachella this year. I hope they have a proper tour this year because it would be amazing to see them live.

The Loss of California's Gold

A part of my childhood died yesterday when I found out that one of my all time favorite television hosts, Huell Howser, passed away. Most people outside California might not know who he is, expect maybe when he was spoofed on The Simpsons, but he was the host of many shows produced through the Los Angeles PBS station KCET that showcased the many great and unknown parts of California. From the Coit Tower to the Bunny Museum in this lady's Pasadena Home. There was something about Huell, that was always endearing. I can't think of any other television host with so much enthusiasm when it came to the hidden treasures of California. One of the phrases he loved using when visiting a place was "that's amazing!"

Watching him made you want to explore parts of California that would never be mentioned on the Travel Channel.  There were no multiple cameras or slick edits. When you watched the show, it felt like you were right alongside him. There will never be another Huell Howser and he will be missed.
