Whovian Wednesday: The Prince and the Doctor

What if the Daleks were voiced by the second in line for the British Throne?

Today Prince Charles and Camilla visited the Doctor Who set in Cardiff, Whales. Charles has been a fan of the show since he was 15, so his inner fanboy must have been seething with excitement. Just look at this picture!

Not only did Charles and Camilla meet with Matt Smith, Jenna Louise Coleman, and Steven Moffat; but they also got to see some the famous Doctor Who monsters. Although I don't consider Strax a monster. More like a potato head.

This final picture is too cute. Charles, just abdicate the throne to William. You'd have way more fun on the Doctor Who set. I can see him as a friend to Wilf becuase he needs to be back on the show too.

Whovian Wednesday: Goodbye My Raggedy Man

As we all know on Saturday, Matt Smith confirmed that he will be departing as the Doctor during the Christmas Special. While it's sad to see him leave, Smith had a good three season run and as we have all known from the beginning, the Doctors life in the TARDIS is brief, but oh so wonderful.

So as we prepare to say goodbye, here are my 11 favorite moments with Eleven.

1) The Eleventh Hour

While we were still in mourning over Ten, we were introduced to Eleven. Full of fun and childlike wonder. Much like Ten, there was something about him where you just wanted to go up and hug him. We also learned that apples are rubbish, beans are evil, and fish fingers and custard is the greatest if strangest food combination ever.

Also... Bow ties are cool. 

2) Vincent and the Doctor

This is my favorite series 5 episode and the last 10 mins of it helped cement it. I still tear up when he brings Van Gogh to the present to show him that his art is appreciated. Although he still Van Gogh still ended his life to Amy's dismay, Eleven has the perfect quote to sum up life, 

“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

3) “Biting is excellent. It’s like kissing only there’s a winner.”

In this Neil Gaiman penned episode, we find out who the Doctors real OTP is, the TARDIS. No matter how many companions he has, what other planets he visits or loves he has (Rose and River), his great love will always be the TARDIS. He does call her "Sexy" after all, but only when they are alone. 

4) Closing Time

I think Craig would have made a great companion to Eleven. I hope he comes back in some capacity for the Christmas Episode. This was my favorite interaction between the two. 

5) The Name of the Doctor

This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes to watch between Eleven and River because we know this verson of her is the one that Ten "saved" from the Library. I really liked River and Eleven together. I think she's just as feisty, (and sometimes even more so) as her mom Amy and she complimented him. I wish there could have been an episode with just the two of them. Also unlike Clara, the TARDIS approves of her.

6) "Raggedy man I remember you are you are late to my wedding!"

My favorite part of this episode? The Doctor dancing like a deranged Giraffe of course. It also has another of my favorite Eleven quotes, 

" We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one." 

7) "And here we are. You and me on the last page."

The last episode with Eleven and the Ponds left me a blubbering mess. Just watching this clip where he runs and finds the "last page" Amy left him in Central Park had me tearing up again. This show has given me so many feels.

8) "I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool."

Don't mess with the fez. Unless you're Amy and River. 

9) "I. AM. TALKING!"

I just love his first big epic speech as as the Doctor basically saying "don't mess with me aliens!" 

10) "Run You Clever Boy and remember..."

Moffat pulled a fast one on us by introducing "Clara" in the Asylum of the Daleks. Although at the time, the Doctor only knew her as Oswin Oswald and that she was actually converted into a Dalek. Now after watching the season finale, it all makes sense. Well kind of. 

11) Cue Benny Hill music.

On second thought, I think watching this might make you even more emotional.

The season finale is before us and I don't know if I want to know the Doctors name. I like the mystery of only knowing him as "The Doctor." But in the meantime, here's the prequel for this Saturdays finale.

Whovian Wednesday: The Nerdist Made Me Watch It

Like any Whovian, there was a time where we have never heard of the show and it was after constant badgering that we finally decided to give it a try. The badgering just happened to come from the Nerdist. I've been listening to the podcasts for the past three years and Chris Hardwick would always mentioned it. I even went to one of the Nerdist live shows during Comic-Con in '11 where Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were their special guests. It wasn't until after Comic-Con that I started watching Doctor Who and you know how the rest goes.

So naturally the Nerdist site would have DW related videos and here are some of my favorites.

Filmed during last years Comic-Con, Chris, Matt, and Johan went up against Matt, Karen, Arthur Darvill, and current show runner and writer Steven Moffat, in some bowling fun where Karen showed her unintentional bowling prowess.

What's even cuter than cat videos? Cute Ten and Eleven puppets in equally as cute video. How many times can I use cute in this description? Four apparently.

Whovian Wednesday: Put A Pin On It

Happy Fish Fingers and Custard Day! On this day we were introduced to the Eleventh Doctor and with the second half of series 7 premiering last Saturday, I thought I should bring back Whovian Wednesdays and regenerate (see what I did there?) to something even bigger and better than before. 

This week I'm showcasing my favorite Doctor Who things that I have found on Pinterest. I have the most followers on that particular board and I have friends IRL start watching the show or unfollow the board because of the amount of things I pin. 

When I heard the news on Saturday that David Tennant and Billie Piper were going to be on the 50th Anniversary Special, I squeed with joy. Seeing this pictures makes me squee even more.

Whovian Wednesdays: Still Traveling After All These Years

I didn’t even know what Doctor Who was until probably year ago when I would casually hear it from relatives and on the Nerdist podcast. I remember starting to watch season one in the beginning of the year, but after watching three episodes I stopped and kept it on the back burner. It wasn’t until after Comic-Con that I plopped down in front of my computer and ended up watching it streaming Netflix and I was instantly hooked. I ended up watching up to the 1st half of season 6 in two weeks. I fell even further down the Doctor Who rabbit hole when I rediscovered Tumblr and found people that were just as obsessed with the show as me*.  

So happy birthday Doctor Who. When you need a new companion, I'll be all packed up and ready for anything. Even if it is going to the planet of the hats.

Whovian Wednesdays Bonus Post: My TARDIS Costume

After many hours and a some revisions, here is what I wore for Halloween, my 50's inspired TARDIS costume. The skirt wasn't too hard to make besides having to sew the zipper which I'm still a novice at, but it was everything else that took a lot of time. The petticoat was the most time consuming, having to sew the rows and rows of tulle, but I like it much better than having to buy one. 

Then it came to how I was going to decorate the skirt. At first I wanted it to be like the TARDIS with panels on the front of the skirt. Instead, I decided to make a mimic the poodle appliques that usually are on a skirt like this. I made a TARDIS applique and had eleven stars following it. The stars represent the eleven Doctors.

I tried making two different type of light toppers for my head, but I wasn't feeling them. So I made some flowers out of the leftover felt, covered it with glitter, and yellow gems on the center part. The final thing was this purse made to look like the Police sign. I took a plain structured bag and covered it with felt and wrapped the handles with ribbon. I then took some white cloth to write out the sign. 

 

 

Overall I really like the way it turned out and now I have a costume I can wear to conventions. I'm also thinking of sewing up another skirt, perhaps a Guild version.

I also wanted to mention that I am the new Admin for the Tumblr site Matt Smith in Places He Shouldn't Be. It's the same as the David Tennant site, but with the 11th Doctor. The site has changed a lot of hands since it was created last month, I'm their third Admin, but I'll be there for the long haul. So follow me there and you can always submit things to the site.

Whovian Wednesdays: The Ballad of Russell and Julie

On Sunday, I posted the cast and crew of Doctor Who singing along to The Proclaimers "500 Miles." The video was part of a DVD that the crew got at the end of David Tennant's run as the Doctor. Also included in that DVD was a tribute to Executive Producer and Writer Russell T. Davies and Executive Producer Julie Gardner who were also leaving the series. 

Performed by David Tennant, Catherine Tate, and John Barrowman, their version is a take off of British Comedian Victoria Wood's "Let's Do It" which is a cheeky piano tune about a couple wanting to, how can I put this lightly, getting it on.

Whovian Wednesdays: David Shouldn't Be Here

From Prancing Cera to Sad Keanu, sometimes all you need is a great picture and some basic Photoshop skills and you have created a new meme. David Tennant in Places He Shouldn't Be is no exception. This Tumblr blog only started last week, but it's already widely popular and it even got a mention on the Official Doctor Who Tumblr.

Whovian Wednesdays: Some Other Works by Davies and Moffat

Now that season six of Doctor Who is over and after the Christmas special, we won't get to see him flying around space and time in his TARDIS until 2012/2013, you're probably wondering what you should watch to tide yourself over. Here are two suggestions that just happen to be from former and current show runners, Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat respectively. 

Torchwood

One of two Doctor Who spinoffs (the other is The Sarah Jane Adventures) created by Davies, Torchwood centers around Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and his team and their daily battle against extraterrestrial and supernatural threats. Set in the Cardiff, Wales branch of the Torchwood Institutes (set up during season two of Doctor Who), Jack is the leader of the group that also includes,  Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd), Toshiko "Tosh" Sato (Naoko Mori), and Owen Harper (Burn Gorman). I like to call Torchwood "Doctor Who after dark" because not only is it a lot more violent, but there's also a lot more sexy times. Fun fact: Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who and was used as a way to disguise the preview tapes when they made the trip from Cardiff to London.

The Doctor isn't the only clever man Steven Moffat writes about. There's also Sherlock Holmes in this new adaptation. Instead of solving crimes in late 19th century London, Sherlock (Benedict Crumberbatch) is now solving them in modern day London with his sidekick Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman). The writing and acting is just so good that the most disappointing part is that only three episodes were made. I thought having to wait a year for new Doctor Who episodes would be tough, it'll be almost two years until new Sherlock episodes premiere and with such a cliffhanger ending in the third episode, I just want it to come back now.

Whovian Wednesdays: DIY TARDIS Bag

Since I've been writing about Doctor Who a lot lately, I thought I should make it a weekly column for all things Whovian. It's also a way to limit how much I talk about it here, so you dear readers don't sick of me writing about it. :P

For my first Whovian Wednesday post I want to show off a project I've been working on for the past week, my TARDIS totebag. I'm extremely happy with the way the bag turned out because on my first attempt I didn't do the proper measurements for the front piece and it looked like crap. So for my second attempt, I spent more time mapping out how I was going to recreate the front of the bag and it came out much better. There are still some things I want to improve for the next time I make one, but with doing any first time project, there's always crafting lessons to be learned. I plan on making another bag to either put in my shop or as a giveaway. Haven't decided yet.
