Round two of my Classic Doctor Who outfits. Like I said previously, recreating the Sixth's outfit was a little challenging because of his crazy colorful coat. So I decided to pull colors from the coat and create a sort of punk outfit out of it. Speaking of the Classic Doctors, it makes me very excited to hear that some of are going to, or already have, be a part of the 50th Anniversary after all!

Whovian Week: Dress Like the Classic Doctors: Part One

Two years ago, I created outfits inspired by Nine, Ten, and Eleven. For the 50th Anniversay, how about I go even further and tackle Doctors One through Eight. I'm doing this in two parts, so today it will be One to Four and tomorrow Five to Eight. Just thinking how I'm going to create an outfit from the Sixth Doctor is getting my creative juices flowing.

Whovian Week: 50th Doctor Who Party

In honor of The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who this Saturday, I'll be posting all things Whovian this week!

After months of waiting, the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is only 6 days away. EEP!
While some of us will be watching the 3D simulcast of the episode in select theaters, a majority of us will be watching it in the comfort of our homes.

So what better way to watch is than to gather some of your favorite fellow Whovians and have a party.

Games

For adult parties, there's always the DW Drinking Game. But there are some really good fun family games too.

Guess the Character

All you need is some index cards or paper. Write the name of a DW character and pin it to the back of your guests as they arrive. During the party, everyone will try to guess who they are but only by characteristics/personalities. 

Costume Contest 

You can't have a DW party without everyone coming in costume. Have different categories, such as Most Creative, Best Doctor and Companion, and Best Villain.

Decor 

If you're looking for some cute Doctor Who fabric for a tablecloth or photo booth backdrop, you should definitely check out Spoonflower and the plethora of artist made fabric. If that's out of your budget, there's also some awesome fabric choices too. 

I might have to go to my local JoAnn's and get this fabric for myself.

With stores stocked with holiday decorations, there's bound to be enough silver star garland to use with your hearts content. 

Oh and don't forget your Standee!

Who wouldn't want a Ten standee at their party... or room. Ehehe.

ModCloth Polyvore Challenge

Last week ModCloth e-mailed me asking if I wanted to be part of their Polyvore Challenge. It's a weekly challenge where bloggers will have one item to create an outfit from with other items currently selling on their site. Each week, the winning outfit gets posted on the ModCloth Ployvore page with a link back to their blog. It's been a while since I have created my dream outfits there, so I thought why not. 

The challenge was to style the Sacramento Style skirt. The first thing I thought when I saw the piece was that it was very summery. With hints of fall already in the air, I wanted to make an outfit that would be versatile in the cooler weather.

Here are the items I paired the skirt with:

- Positive Cat-itude Sweater 

Sweaters with animals are all the rage this season and it makes the outfit a bit more casual. Plus the green in the cat's eye matches the green in the skirt.

- Indie Rock Star Jacket 

Not only does the jacket lend a tomboy edge to the outfit, but the black helps temper the bright colors. 

- Conifers Things First Bag 

I just really like this bag and I need to add to my Christmas wish list. 

- Know a Trick of Two Tights and Seychelles Scoundrel Booties

Made to look like knee socks are attached, these tights are very clever. Also who doesn't like a wearable brown flat bootie. 

- Brick and Chose Earrings
I like the subtle hint of nerdom in these earrings.

Tonight I'm going up to San Jose for the weekend where I'll be attending a family function and I can't wait . It's been 5-6 years since I've last visited the Bay Area and while it may be a short trip, I hope I can at least squeeze in some thrift store shopping, a visit to Coit Tower, and stopping by Kara's Cupcakes. 

I also used this as an excuse to make some outfits I would wear. I actually might attempt outfit #2 because I have the top in my closet.

Style Inspirations: An American Girl Holiday

It's been a while since I did a Style Inspirations post and what a better time to do it than during the holiday season.

Having an American Girl doll was one of the things I wanted so much growing up. I remember one of my friends bringing her Felicity doll for show and tell in elementary school and just wanting to play with it. But the thing about the dolls was that they were so darn expensive and that didn't even include her clothes, furniture, and accessories. So instead, I would spend days pouring over the American Girls catalog writing wish lists (basically the entire catalog) and reading all the books. 

One day when I have a daughter or a niece, I would love to give her an American Girl doll. But for now, here are some ways you can draw holiday outfit inspirations from the dolls I grew up with; Felicity, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha, and Molly.

Style Inspirations: Color Me Mine

Every spring and fall season, Pantone puts out their Fashion Color Report. Basically it's the colors that will be most popular and were featured in various designer collections during fashion week. 

This years theme for the women's color report is called Sensible and Spirited:

Taking cues from the great masters, sepia tones of old Hollywood, Chinese opera, cityscapes and countryside, designers are paying close attention to texture, contrast and color for fall 2011 – pairing menswear with feminine twists, warm prints with cool metals, incorporating both old and new influences, and creating an intriguing balance between colors.

Some of the colors might scream spring to you, but they are a great way to add color to the black, greys, and other various neutral colors that is worn during the fall/winter season. They bring in some much needed color during those long winter days.

Style Inspirations: What to Wear While Waiting For The Great Pumpkin

Have a Halloween event you have to go to and don't know what to dress up as. Well here are some ideas.

As long as you don't get too much red on you, this is the perfect outfit to wear while running away from zombies. Remember to aim for the head and if you have to use your record collection as a weapon, use the crappy albums first. Style Inspiration: Jane Eyre

Last week I finally watched Jane Eyre and I liked it so much I ended up watching it twice in a row. It's such a moody and romantic film and I thought Mia Wshikowska and Michael Fassbender were fantastic as Jane and Mr. Rochester. For today's style inspiration I wanted to translate some of Jane's 19th century dress to today, which is very easy to do. With small flower prints, plaid, lace-up boots and even a cape, you can channel your inner Jane Eyre without having to wear a hoop skirt and bonnet.

Style Inspirations: Picnic at Hanging Rock

When it comes to scary movies, I like those that have a physiological, suspenseful, and mysterious bent. The ones where it's more of an unseen force or apparition rather than someone with a mask wielding a knife that the characters need to fend off. I was more freaked out by The Grudge than Scream. One movie that gave me the creeps after I watched it is the 1975 Peter Weir film, Picnic at Hanging Rock.

A summary about the film:

Three students and a school teacher disappear on an excursion to Hanging Rock, in Victoria, Australia on Valentine's Day, 1900. Widely (and incorrectly) regarded as being based on a true story, the movie follows those that disappeared, and those that stayed behind, but it delights in the asking of questions, not the answering of them. - IMDB

It might not be your typical scary movie, it's unfolds at a much slower pace, but it does make you think twice about hiking up rocky terrain in the Australian heat. Of course another thing I liked was the costuming in the film. Although it is set in the 1900s, there is a slight 70s influence since brands like Gunne Sax and Young Edwardian were popular at the time. Styles like this are still influential and you can see it in brands like Rodarte, Charles Anastase, or Lover. The outfits I picked give a nod to the costuming in the film but while still being modern to wear in real life.
